VERSE & VOICE: Women singers and the art of lyricism

Capstone Project, Spring 2024

Verse & Voice: Women Singers and the Art of Lyricism is my capstone project dedicated to the visibility of femme voices through lyrical expression. It pulls back the layers in music, examining narratives within this art form and shedding light on industry gender disparities.

This initiative solely focuses on women artists amidst pervasive gender imbalances in a field characterized by male dominance. It offers a nuanced perspective on the intersection of artistic expression and gender dynamics within the music industry.

This transmedia project includes a lyric book that visually and typographically shares narrative, a series of ‘call to action’ posters, and a personalized song that I wrote.

Verse & Voice: Women Singers and the Art of Lyricism offers a melodic journey that unveils my hope for a more equitable music industry.

Below is the audio piece of my capstone project. I wrote the first song, and the second is a heartfelt rendition of Skeeter Davis's The End of the World. Combined in a single audio file, they're accompanied by landscape imagery. Each song features a unique vocalist: Kai McCall sings the first, followed by Jacob Amaro in the second.

(In a perfect world, I would’ve spent more time on the song by adding background vocals and other things. I value music immensely, and writing music is a true passion of mine. However, since I was taking 21 credits during the time of creating my capstone, I had to prioritize the physical pieces for the exhibition. I write music almost every day.)
